My work is an ongoing exploration into a connection between the lyrical structure, rhythm, and cadence of centuries-old hymn texts and abstract painting. I am interested in how the language of historic hymn texts has been used in generations both old and new to convey theologically rich truths. I am also inspired by musicians’ efforts in recent decades to contemporize the content of hymns and reinvigorate deep truths contained within by connecting them to this day with newer music. Most of the hymns I consider have never been paired with music, so I liken my artistic efforts to providing a visual context for theological content in an abstract way. I explore the language of color to communicate emotion, sentiment, and the complexity of my beliefs and life experiences. In all of this, color is a gateway to communicating with the viewer. I use color to create rich and complex compositions that offer hope, joy, and encourage both exploration and introspection.
